Lari Cherry

The Cherry of Lari is a Traditional Agricultural Product (PAT) present in the national list approved by the Ministry of Agriculture Food and Forestry, the requirements of which are regulated by the production discipline of the Tuscany Region.

Variety

Lari cherry is present in 19 varieties throughout the municipality of Lari.

  • Legavel: matures in the second fortnight of May; it’s very sweet and tender.
  • Heart: medium-sized with white punctuation, very tasty, risks extinction.
  • Siso: the plant has long branches. The fruit is whiteish, very tasty, and oval with the short pigeon.
  • Papalina: matures in the first decade of June; it is tasty, gloomy red and has a short stem.
  • Del paretaio: it is oval, of good taste and aroma; is endangered (there is only one plant left).
  • Morella del Meini: particular variety of morella rather rare.
  • Di Nello: selected around 1920 by a farmer who gave her name, she has colored flesh.
  • Of William:it is endangered and is present with few plants in Tomaia; The name comes from the grower who selected it.
  • Orlando: fruiting on a few trees in Colle resorts; is endangered.
  • Elijah:There are only a few trees at Lari’s doorstep.
  • Cevoli’s Early:Mature in the first half of May. Small, medium stem, with white paste, red peel and white punctuation.
  • Morella: is a rare species that matures in the last decade of June; it is very juicy and intense in color.
  • Garden:round, tasty, well-coloured and with short pigeon; is located in Lari’s plains.
  • Lari’s Marchianella: as the markiana is small and very tasty, they found themselves isolated fruits on a single plant in the resort Lari Woods.
  • Usigliano: it is very fragrant and with an intense flavor; has oval shape and purple-tending skin.
  • Late Morellona: intense in color and very juicy, it is found on a few trees in the resort of San Bastiano.
  • Marchan:mature of the second decade of June; it is small, tasty and tender and has the long stem.
  • Montemagno also called Angela: very few trees can be seen only in Usigliano; risks extinction.
  • Crognola: is the later species (mature in the last decade of June) and is located in Casciana Alta; round, bright red, is very juicy.

Cultivation

Lari’s cherry, although its characteristics change depending on the variety cultivated, is a consistent fruit, deep red and with a sugary flavor.
It is a native cultivar native to Pisa.
